Summer is here, which means for many people, it’s vacation season. However, it can sometimes be challenging to take time off to travel, due to things like budget restrictions, family obligations, or your busy work schedule.
Even if your responsibilities inhibit you from jet setting somewhere, you can recreate that vacation you’ve been dreaming about by having a staycation instead– a simple way to unplug, unwind, and refresh from your busy schedule.
A staycation allows you to get the mental and emotional benefits of a vacation, without actually having to go out of town. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to be a tourist in your own city learning and exploring along the way. Here are some tips to help you plan a dream staycation.
Look at unique lodging options.
If it’s in your budget, one of the best ways to make a staycation feel special is to rent a unique place to stay. Look at boutique hotels in your area, Airbnbs that could give you a one-of-a-kind experience, or local vacation rentals from websites like VRBO. For example, you could stay in a house with a fantastic view of the place you live, or look for a cabin, Airstream trailer, or some unique structure to change up the scenery. You should also look at the amenities you’d get – is there a great restaurant nearby or a pool onsite that you wouldn’t get at home? Staying in a unique place can help make the experience feel even more like a vacation.
Plan out your reading and movie list.
A staycation is a perfect opportunity to catch up on some entertainment that you haven’t had time to enjoy yet. Before your staycation, create a reading list and a “must watch” list of TV shows, movies, documentaries, or even YouTube videos! These selections should create joy, make you feel relaxed, happy, and result in turning off the stress response that can happen in our day-to-day. This is time to turn your brain off and really let yourself relax and even feel creative!
Be a tourist in your own city.
When’s the last time you explored the city you live in? Now is the perfect opportunity to try out the “touristy” things in your area that you wouldn’t usually get to do. Head to the downtown areas and check out the landmarks, shopping, and nightlife that you might not have time to enjoy in your normal life. You can also try something different by heading to a neighborhood that you don’t typically get to explore, and checking out cafes, boutiques, and restaurants. Another fun option would be to book a unique guided tour and see your city from an entirely new perspective. Airbnb Experiences is a great place to look for these types of activities, led by other expert locals.
Another tip: take yourself out on a solo date! Sit at the bar, order a glass of wine and a good meal. Take up a conversation with the bartender or the bar patrons sitting on either side of you! It could be a great way to meet new people and indulge in different discussions.
Stay away from your email.
The main goal of a staycation is to return feeling rejuvenated and happy – which means in order for it to be really effective, you should stay away from your email, work text messages, and any other technology that might stress you out! If you really struggle with this, try putting your phone or computer in a drawer while you are out having fun – if it’s not by your side, you will be far less tempted to check it. A social “blackout” may be just what you need!
