June 8th, 2019, is Global Wellness Day, and it’s the perfect occasion to reflect on what you can to do live a happier and healthier life. So many of us set goals to live better, but never actually take the time or the effort to make them into a reality. When life gets busy, it can be difficult to eat healthier, take more time to work out, or start a new hobby, for example. Global Wellness Day was created to give you a reminder and an opportunity to improve your personal wellbeing – and help those around you live well too.
The goals of Global Wellness Day are very broad because wellness means different things to different people. You can celebrate this day by stopping to reflect on what wellness means to you, let go and forgive yourself of everyday stress, and appreciate just how valuable life is. Global Wellness Day was first celebrated in Turkey in 2012 but has since become a worldwide phenomenon. You’ll see major brands, government ambassadors from around the world, and most importantly, people just like you documenting their experiences on social media and sharing their wellness with others.
Global Wellness Day is so important because depression and other mental health conditions are prevalent throughout the entire world. Treating this pervasive unhappiness is going to take more than just doctors – it requires a global change in mindset. We need to value the things that help us feel better in the long term, and this day is the perfect time to start.
Not sure how to celebrate Global Wellness Day? There are so many small things you can do to get started. Try one of these ideas:
Cook a healthy dinner, and eat it with loved ones. You’ll save money on going out, treat your body well, and get to spend quality time with those you care about.
Try a new workout that challenges you. Normally run outside? Try taking a dance, yoga, or martial arts class. If you usually work out in the gym, try doing something in nature, like hiking, surfing, or rock climbing!
Switch to reusable items. Plastic tableware and water bottles create huge amounts of waste, so you’ll be helping the planet!
Give your time to someone that needs it. This could be by formally volunteering at an organization you care about, or just helping out a friend who is going through a tough time.
Spend time outside. Today is the perfect day to appreciate the world around you. Go for a walk, have a picnic at the park, or just read a book on your porch.
Enjoy some ‘me’ time. Take a bubble bath, put on a face mask, and relax with your favorite hobbies. Let go of the stressors in your life and treat yourself nicely.
